Kidney Stones

A kidney Stone is a hard crystal structure that builds up over time and becomes lodged in the kidney tubules 'nephrons' or elsewhere in the urinary tract.  It is largely made up of mineral deposits filtered out of the blood and not appropriately expelled in suspension in the urine.

Kidney Stones Cause

Kidney stones form when the fluids, minerals and acidity in the kidneys are out of balance. urinary-tract infections are suspected when sharp, 'struvite', or 'stag horn' stones form . Uric acid stones may be caused by a high-protein diets, and a small percentage of kidney stones are predominantly cystine.  Most stones are calcium-based, regardless of their type.

Kidney Stone Symptoms

Symptoms of kidney stones include pain and blood in the urine.  80% of stones are under 5mm in diameter but are often razor sharp and therefore easily lodge in the tiny tubules of the kidneys, called the nephrons.  Kidney stones symptoms are mostly experienced as a sharp stabbing pain on one or other side of the lower back or flank.

Kidney Stone Pain

The pain may last from seconds to several minutes, followed by a period of relief before another 'attack'.  The pain generally comes from the kidneys themselves, although a dislodged stone may pass from the kidney into the ureter (which is the tube from the kidney to the bladder) and cut or chafe the tube as it passes.

Passing Kidney Stone

Passing kidney stones can be exquisitely painful, sometimes causing a person to faint.  Naturally if the sharp edges of the stone can be smoothed or the stone can be completely dissolved, it can be passed effortlessly and the pain can be avoided.  Fortunately this is easily achieved in the vast majority of cases.

Passing a kidney stone may happen all at once or it may occur in several stages.  Firstly the stone may shift in the kidneys, causing the first spasms.  If you are unfortunate, it may take weeks for the stone to move through the kidney, causing unpredictable sharp stabbing pains as it goes.

Once a sharp stone or 'stag horn' stone (so named because of its shape) leaves the kidney, it passes into the ureter, before reaching the bladder.  Often it will continue its journey straight from the urinary bladder into the urethra and out.  Again this can be an eye watering experience, sometimes leading to fainting.  For this reason it is often recommended that people with known kidney stones sit when passing water to avoid the danger of falling.

Kidney Stones Treatment

Conventional kidney stone treatment is very limited, costly and often invasive.  The first advice you may get from a Doctor, is to drink LOTS of water to flush out your stones.  Assuming this fails - particularly if the stones are large, a shock wave treatment called lipotripsy may be suggested.  Many stones will not respond to shock wave therapy, so surgery, either using a laser or a stone-grabbing tool will be resorted to.
