Alpha Lipoic Acid / Thioctic Acid (250mg) Description

Alpha-lipoic acid has been dubbed the "universal antioxidant" because it is both water- and fat-soluble. It can access tissues composed mainly of fat, such as the nervous system, as well as those made mainly of water, such as the major organs and  protect them from oxidative or free-radical damage.

Alpha-lipoic acid helps vitamin E, vitamin C, and glutathione to be utilised, as well as helping the B vitamins convert proteins, carbohydrates, and fats into energy.

It is one of the most powerful antioxidants discovered and works synergistically to elevate the body’s most abundant antioxidant, glutathione.

Spinach, liver, and brewer's yeast all contain Alpha-lipoic acid. Our bodies also produce it, mainly to help convert glucose to energy in the mitochondria of the cells.

There is no Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for alpha-lipoic acid. Studies have found that 100 milligrams taken twice daily is enough to supply extra free-radical protection throughout the body.

Some health complaints, which are thought to be largely free radical induced, include Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, atherosclerosis, glaucoma and liver disease.  Some hospitals use intravenous forms of alpha-lipoic acid to treat acute poisoning, particularly when it may affect the liver.

Extensive studies have been conducted into the effectiveness of, combining Alpha-lipoic acid with gamma linolenic acid for both diabetic neuropathy and autonomic neuropathy.

Diabetic neuropathy is characterised by tingling, numbness, and pain in the body. Autonomic neuropathy affects the nerves controlling internal organs, and may also be linked to free-radical damage. A benefit of Alpha-lipoic acid when addressing these conditions is that it is a fat-soluble antioxidant, and may therefore penetrate the nerve cells to prevent further damage.

Cautions:
Alpha-lipoic acid helps regulate glucose metabolism, it may also improve blood-sugar levels. We therefore recommend you should only supplement alpha-lipoic acid under the supervision of a physician.  If you are diabetic, you may need to adjust your dosage of insulin or other diabetes medications.
